birding

No Birding Today

Let me explain-

Rain, rain, rain…

Drives me insane, insane, insane…

it’s such a pain, pain, pain…

So all I do is complain, complain, complain…

The Woodpecker

Peck, peck, peck, peck, peck, peck, peck, peck, peck, peck, peck, peck, peck, peck, peck. peck…

You’d think they’d just end up with a pain in the neck

but

Lo and behold,

a little round hole.

What the heck,

now they have a home in a telephone pole.

The Pelican (by Dixon Lanier Merritt)

A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His bill will hold more than his belican.
He can take in his beak
Food enough for a week,
But I’m damned if I see how the helican.

The American Kestral

The American Kestral is celestial

so for its prey

wherever they may dwell

it’s dangerously more than a pestral.

The Budgerigar

Gentle you are

A great budgie mate you are

A wonderfully perpetual chirp, chirp, chirper you are

Animated you are

Active you are

Intelligent you are

A sentient individual you are

That’s why you are

a parakeet with the name budgerigar

(in memory of Peekie 9/24/2022)

The Male Vermilion Flycatcher

Brilliant red underneath

with a black mask

as gorgeous a bird you could ever ask for,

the male vermilion flycatcher

without fail

is a real eye catcher.

The European Starling

So common

these Europeans

are often viewed as birdy peons.

Loud, pesty, messy, and aggressive

they may not be little darlings

but displaying a glorious purple and green iridescense

along with a bright yellow bill

and bold white dotting on its body

these starlings are certainly startling.

The Boobies

High power binoculared I obsessively voyaged far to view a booby,

but no voyeur is me.

Not one but two did I see

the Blue-Footed and Brown

when I went out to sea.

The Northern Cardinal

If you’ve ever heard and seen this brilliantly lovely and lively bird,

you’d have to think it’s a cardinal sin

only in seven that it’s the state bird in.

The Unviewed Blue Mockingbird

A skulker with a beautiful blue hue

If you want to get a mockingbird view

make sure you don’t say a word

or worse yet go hachoo

otherwise you’ll be a viewless sulker.
