The state bird of seven northeastern U.S. states

but alas not the one I live in

if anybody does harm to a Northern Cardinal

they are committing a cardinal sin.

Cuckoos

If you’re cuckoo about cuckoos

whether they’re lesser or greater

you’ll think roadrunners

are real stunners

The Blue Jay

The gorgeous active aggressive noisy Blue Jay

by people is either loved or hated

but this ultra intelligent bird doesn’t care

as long as its fate isn’t to be ated.

The Roseate Spoonbill

Gorgeous from afar and close up bizarre,

Pink and white

With a long flattened bill plus a shape like a football,

Related to the Ibis the best that I can recall-

In English a Roseate Spoonbill

and in Spanish a Espatula Rosada,

but no matter in what lingo

Please, please don’t call them a Pink Flamingo!

Roadrunner Why?

 

Roadrunners, Lesser and Greater, are birds quite shy.

However, unbird-like, most often they’d rather run than fly.

You may ask why,

Behaviorally, down-to-earth, they do so choose.

The answer is not meant to confuse,

As after all, they really are just Cuckoos!

To keep that crested red bird caged-in,

Is an uncontested cardinal sin.

The Budgie

In the U.S.A. the keepers keep saying a parakeet,

but for Pete’s sake,

I don’t mean to be a nudgie,

Can’t they be trained to say a budgie!
